It was exciting to be in Whitefish, Montana this past week. When those big, white snowflakes started falling and did not stop for five days, smiles were easy to come by. News spread fast. Here is what Whitefish Mountain Resort had to say:

Winter storm cycle brings two feet of snow to Whitefish Mountain Resort
Additional storms lined up to bring more snow through the weekend

WHITEFISH, MT - January 19, 2012 - La Nińa has arrived fashionably late for winter in Montana. Two feet of snow has been measured at the summit stake at Whitefish Mountain Resort in the last five days, and deeper conditions exist around the mountain. The resort is reporting a 61-inch (155 cm) base at the summit and 50-inch (127 cm) base at mid-mountain.

"The storms that have rolled through northwest Montana this week have created the best conditions of the season so far," said Whitefish Mountain Resort President Dan Graves. "It's light, dry and sheer joy for skiers who have been waiting all season for that deep powder experience."

New 24-hour snow totals at the summit this week:

"We are excited to have such great coverage throughout the resort and we've been able to open the last of our closed terrain thanks to the recent snow," said Whitefish Mountain Resort Ski Patrol Director Tary King. "With additional snow comes additional vigilance, make sure to ski with a buddy and keep them in sight."

A Winter Storm Warning, issued by the National Weather Service, is still in effect until 7 p.m. this evening. Forecasts are calling for new snow accumulation tonight, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

A picture is better than words -

Snow is piling up out there!!

Come on! Let's go test the product!

Short walk to Ski Out here

Grab some friends to go along

Jesus likes the snow, too!

Ski home - tired and happy.

When winter weather arrives my inclination is to cozy up to the fire with a good book. The many hours of darkness slow your mind down, bring on afternoon naps and enjoying all seven hobbit meals (breakfast, second breakfast, elevensies, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, and supper). This inertia is good for a short time but then you must fight back and get off the couch and out the door to experience the exhilaration of the winter season.

When you put on warm clothes, don your cross country skis and stride off down the trail, the oxygen that you gasp into your lungs lights up every cell in your body and you see with extreme clarity the green of the trees, the crystals of the snow and the blue of the sky. When you put on your helmet and strap on your board(s) and ride up to the Summit you realize that you should have been here sooner and your heart expands with happiness as you glide on the corduroy textured snow down, down, down, only to go up and down again! When you straddle the snowmobile, grab the handles and give it some gas as you race up the trail you feel like you could fly. Then you turn off into a snow field where the machine glides through the snow like a dream and you find yourself singing out loud. What book could ever compare……

These beautiful birds have been sighted here in significant numbers. They were the only ones that were happy about the unusually light snow pack in the Valley.

Snowy owls, or Bubo scandiacus, are easily identifiable because of their large size - 2 feet or more tall with wingspans of almost 5 feet - as well as their brilliant white color. Only older males are almost completely white. Otherwise, the birds maintain black barring or flecking. it's possible that the birds disperse south after successful breeding seasons in order to spread out the competition for a finite food source. Or they may be facing a shortage of food or harsh weather. In the Arctic, where the birds nest and breed, they eat mostly lemmings, a small, mouselike animal that lives in the tundra. They will also eat other small animals, such as rabbits and birds. Snowy owls have been spotted in Montana's fields as they sit atop fence posts, utility poles or rises on the ground.
